I Bid Fare Well To August

Today is the last day of August. The reason why I bring this up so bluntly, is because August has always been one of the most special months of the year for me. This is not only because my birthday is in this month, but also because it is sort of the last chance to squeeze in all the summer fun you can possibly squish into your year. At first, this seems like something I would dread. I don't exactly like goodbyes all that much. But when we sit back, and look at our summer gone by, (or at least most of it gone by, since officially, it doesn't actually end 'til next month) we realize something:

The Holidays are just around the corner.
The best is yet to come.

...What a nice thought! Without my little "good things/good times around the corner" thoughts that I get daily I don't think I'd make it through the week.
There is always something to look forward to.

Changing up the subject a little:

I just had an interestingly simple realization today.
I was sitting on the couch, just thinking. The couch I was sitting on faces the windows. The blinds were wide open, and sunshine was kinda illuminating the room. I looked out the window, and I saw the sky.
Just the sky. No clouds, no airplanes, not helicopters, not air balloons.
Just sky.
And then it struck me:
The sky is blue.
Just blue. Not plain old white. A beautiful, clear, striking, amazing blue.

We often take a fact so simple as that for granted. An hour ago, for all I cared, the sky could be white. When we trap ourselves inside, and don't look out the windows, we don't even care what color the sky is.We think our daily, hectic life schedules are more important than anything. And indeed, our lives and how we live them is important. But to let ourselves caught up in so many things at once, without ever taking the time to realize the beauty, and magic, and wonder of the things surrounding us, and just around the corner just seems like such a waste.

Look at the colors around you. In nature. Out your window.
Look at the wind that blunders through your backyard. Watch how free it is. Yet it never is satisfied about where it gets.

...There's a lesson in that, I'm sure.

The point of making them black and white was to give them an "Art-dekoish" feel to them.

I'm Hey Diddle Diddleing

Hi there. I'm sorry I haven't been posting all that much. I'm going to blame it on school. School drains the inspiration.
...Well, maybe not all school. When it's a creative writing assignment, I'm all in.

Speaking of...

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such a sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

...Wondering what in the world THAT has to do with anything? I don't blame you. I'm not really one to write down nursery rhymes (...why do they call those that anyway? Most nursery rhymes have a hard to find hidden moral, and a ton of violence - take the Three Blind Mice for an example...). Hey Diddle Diddle, however, was the nursery rhyme that I chose to make a story of. It was a writing exercise that we ran out of time to do at Co-op. I picked this one, because there is a part in The Fellowship of The Ring, where Tolkien did kinda the same thing with the 'making a rhyme into a big poem.' Of course his version of Hey Diddle Diddle is unbeatable.

But I tried.

...And then I kinda took it to an extreme - and it also makes me sound like Dr. Seuss Jr. - but then again, I like creative writing (and reading nursery rhymes make me start sounding like this).

The Story Behind the Story Of Hey Diddle Diddle


There once was a very peculiar cow,
Who lived in a stable in the town of Lynn,
And when she jumped, she'd jump so high that she'd often soar up miles in the wind.
And in that town there was a little laughing dog, who lived right down the street.
He laughed so uncommonly hard he'd often laugh himself to sleep.
The dog always slept near a set of silverware and dishes,
Which lay near the fireplace as the dog dreamt of treats and riches.
There also was a gifted cat, who wore no boots, coat, or hat,
But played away on his dear fiddle the cherished tune of Hey Diddle Diddle.

Not long ago on a brisk summer's twilight, the moon refused to rise with the oncoming night.
The townsfolk were surprised, and also uneasy.
For the sun had set, and the they were becoming queasy.
But nobody fear! For just before dark with a jolt and a jiggle advanced the extraordinary cat holding his capital fiddle.
And he took up his place in front of the people,
And started to play his melodious song in a way that had never been heard, neither over nor beyond, nor under any steeple.
The air was filled with the noise of the fiddle,
And that wonderful tune of Hey Diddle Diddle.
Then lo, a dish that rested near the dog, stood up on its end, awake and alive.
It took up the spoon and ran out the door altogether forgetting the knife.
This woke the dog, who bounced to his feet,
And instantly began laughing at the jest, right along to the beat.
His laugh was so loud it rang through the town, instantly waking the dozing cow.
She raised up her head and pranced out of bed.
And sprang away high, leaping far into the sky,
She then realized she was not coming down any time soon,
For she had jumped right over the moon!
Then the cat ended his song,
And the townsfolk of Lynn trudged back to their homes,
Straight back to bed where at night they belong.

The moon, being sleepy, had risen very late.
And the spoon and the plate?
They got quite far and lived quite long,
Until a man mowed them over while mowing his lawn.
The cow, after landing, went right back to sleep,
And the little laughing dog returned to his dreams of bones and meat.
The cat, however, left Lynn shortly after,
Leaving his remarkable fiddle up in a rafter.
But you can still hear the tales of that revered fiddle,
And the glorious, marvelous, magical tune of Hey Diddle Diddle.

My Homeland of Promise

America, Land of...

Vibrant sunsets, speckled with cotton candy colored clouds,

Sun-baked foothills, over which empty breezes whisper in the silence,

Acres of rustic woods, filled with creaking trunks and quivering leaves,

Awe-inspiring eagles, that soar effortlessly through the air, riding on the wings of the wind,

Clear, smooth, soundless lakes, that reflect the beauty of the lands around them,

Perilous cliffs, breath-taking canyons, and vast caverns, that rest under the skies of opportunity.

America, Land of...

Broken people, who hunger to know the true meaning of love, justice, and peace,

God's own people, who shall always have a lasting future, and a living hope.

Oh Yeah! Mission FINALLY Accomplished!

Whoo hoo! I'm soooo glad I finished my last post(s)! Those guys were tough! 100 things about yourself gets a little old after a while...

Well, I'm glad I have my blog back the way it was: a day-to-day/week-to-week journal-on-a-screen blog. Not a: "hmmm... what should I post on my blog... ...oh... I have to finish my other post first... Ehn..." type of blog.
In fact, I did start using Dragons Fly like this blog a little. And you can see that blog if you check out the link.

So... How are you? I am disappointed: summer is over.

School is here...

...I don't want to say that very loud. The mood might affect everyone around here.

So anyway, right now I was going to share with you my favorite memories of  when I was probably about 4 or 5 or 6 or 7. Me & my brother used to go to our friends, the G's house pretty often then. The G's have been family friends since before I was born, my parents and Mr. and Mrs. G became really good friends right after they got out of college.
I remember when my brother and I would go over there, and we'd pretend that we were veterinarians. We'd take the many stuffed animals in Hannah G's collection, and pretend to doctor them and all that. Or, if we were at our house, we'd use my many stuffed animals (that still sit on shelves in my room). We called this game "Animal Doctor."
Another thing that was invented by my brother and Rachel G, was the simple, and of course, wonderfully tasting dish of "Jalapies" (pronounced Ja-LA-Pea). This outdoor delicacy consisted of two ingredients (here is the recipe if you are interested):

  • 1 to 2 handfuls of mud.
  • 1 large mulberry leaf.
Begin by mixing your mud to the desired consistency (it is better a more moist and sloppy mud-mix than a dry, and crumbly mix). Then, begin to slather your mud onto the leaf, leaving the mud away from the edges. Fold your leaf into a taco formation. Enjoy before hot, south-western sun bakes mud into dirt.*

*Not recommended for human consumption.

...Okay, okay, so we didn't exactly eat the Jalapies (at least I don't remember eating them...), but it was a popular pretend cuisine. Playing with mud was a big thing in our backyard then, and to this day, I am still a mud-lover. And though I never actually ate one, Jalapies will forever be a memory of fun for me.

I also remember going to the G's, and dressing up in their little prairie dress-up gowns, and pretending to re-enact Little House on The Prairie (...I was always Laura...).

There was one other thing that I remember. It was the game where we would rampage through the G's house, grabbing every and any pillow or blanket we could find. Then, we would use the biggest of all blankets to put on the bottom of this play-climbing bench thing. (I'll show you in an illustration of something like what I'm talking about [it didn't look quite like this, and it had four walls and not three]).

We'd stack the remaining pillows & blankets over the big one that was on the blue bench, and then put our heads under the bench, leaving the rest of us to stick out, into the play-thingy. We'd then pull the big blanket, that was under all the rest, and dangling off the bench, and send an avalanche of pillows and bedding tumbling down on us. The cool thing about this was the fact that we could still talk to each other and laugh and shriek together, since our heads were still under the 'roof.' After enjoying the feeling of the world caving in on you in the form of soft pillows, our goal was to wriggle out of the chaos and escape through the holes in the bottom of the thing.

...And then start right over again...

...And I must admit, it wasn't uncommon that we would forget to put everything back. I fear that I must say that there were probably stray sheets and pillows in the wrong places at the G's for many a day after.

But now, those days of mud and pillows are over.

But as I said, they are my memories.

...And those tend to last a bit longer than other things...

This is a continuation of my last post.

100 things about myself: continued

51) I'm very tired at the moment.

52) One of my favorite verses in the bible is Isaiah 40:31 - Those who trust in the LORD renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk, and not grow faint.

53) I ate bacon today.

54) I love bubble wrap ...ahh, the little pleasures in life...

55) I like to chew and suck on ice.

56) I never did learn how to swim the right way, so I adapted, and I've always done it my own way. (growing up in a hot, desert of a city, almost everyone has a pool or goes to a public pool that's around town).

57) I don't think I've ever been out of the United States before... ...It would be neat to go to New Zealand though...

58) I need to go turn the fan on in the room.

59) I love Focus on The Family, Radio Theater Books!!
These thing are really neat! I listened to The Chronicles of Narnia as a Radio Theater book wayyyy before I ever actually read the book book. And I think that might be one reason why I love them so much.
I would strongly recommend you check 'em out. Especially if you like literature.
At their website, they have freebies that you can listen to, including (listed are my favorites):
  • The Chronicles of Narnia - The Magician's Nephew
  • The Secret Garden
  • Luke Reports (these are very interesting, because they are radio theater dramas about the disciple Luke, writing the book of Luke, that's found in the bible. The Luke Reports take you into what it was like to be a reporter of history back in the first century ...really neat stuff...)
and a bunch of other random things that you can hear for free. I like radio theater because, instead of having a voice read it to you, you actually hear everything: the sound effects, the different people, the music, the background noise... Everything!!
 The freebies only last for a limited time, and then they are replaced by new ones, so the ones that I've listed won't be there forever.
So check it out if you have a minute!

60) One time, I fell out of a tree.

61) Now today is 8/7/11.

62) ...In fact, today is my birthday.

63) Today at my church is was Promotion Sunday.

64) I seem to have gotten mysterious bug bites that make a perfect X or a cross on my wrist.

65) I defiantly enjoy good chicken noodle soup.

66) I LOVE MUSHROOMS.

67) One of my favorite smells is the smell of a new book when it's opened.

68) I really don't like libraries compared to bookstores.

69) My dog likes to eat bees.

70) ...He also likes to eat honeysuckle flowers.

71) I think that this post of things about me is getting stretched to thing that are going on around me.

72) I am wearing a new pair of shoes.

73) I love to laugh and make other people laugh.
...unfortunately, it is rare is I can think of a funny thing to say at just the right time (this bugs me a lot).

74) I am one of those people who come back with the perfect retort or sarcastic reply eight hours after I need it, while I'm lying in bed recapping my night.

75) I often re-talk and re-live certain conversations that I've had with other people, only I change a few things that I said to things that I wished I had said.
...Does that even make sense??

76) I don't really like making phone calls.

77) I once dialed a wrong number, and ended up talking to a guy named Mike.

78) Manikins creep me out sometimes.
...Every once in a while I envision that they're real people (this happens because of the time I was posing by a statue that turned out to be a person dressed up as a statue ...you can imagine how that ended...).

79) I think skater shoes look cool.

80) A few of the movies that I remember watching when I was little are: The Land Before Time, Veggie Tales, and The Fox and The Hound.

81) I don't like chewing gum.

82) I like to watch fire (not as a wild-fire, or something catastrophic like that, but in a fire pit or the like). Something about it, as it dances and flickers, showing of vibrant lights and colors sorta inchants me, and inspires me.

83) You've probably noticed this, but I like to use ... when I'm writing my thoughts out on my blog(s). I think this is because that's the way that I really actually think.
...And sometimes I talk like that too.

84) I am very proud of myself for getting to #84 already.

85) I often like to braid embroidery floss in a bunch of different ways and make bracelets and stuff like that.

86) I prefer to use pens over pencils.

87) However, if I do need to use a writing utensil that erases, I like to use mechanical pencils.

88) I write with my left hand (though I'm better with my right hand then most people are with their left), eat with both hands, and I'm generally dominate with with my right side for everything else.

89) When this blog was first made, I originally called it Horsecrazyforpeople.blogspot.com, intending it to be a sort of website where people could learn about horses and stuff like that.
...Boy did that get changed around!

90) My current thoughts: ...ten more things to go... ...just ten more... ...almost over... ...ten more things, c'mon...

91) I have a good-sized collection of Breyer horses sitting here in my room with me.

92) I like places with more light shining through, compared to places that are dark.

93) If it suddenly gets cloudy on a nice, sunshineish day, my mood changes quite quickly.

94) I love to read the comics in the newspaper every day. Fortunately, we have a subscription to the daily news in paper-form to be delivered right to our driveway.

95) I think M'n'ms are better than Skittles... It's strange how the look alike and taste so different!

96) I once was in a contest at my church youth group where our team had to be the first team to eat a whole jar of Skittles... this is much harder than it sounds (have you ever taken the time to notice how chewy those little things are???)... but we WON!

97) I often feel this strange urge to blow something up and build it back together again, only improving it in the process.
...After receiving this feeling, I find myself re-arranging my room...

98) I like chocolate covered potato chips.

99) My favorite number is 99!

100) I have written down 100 things about myself!!! And in doing so, completed my mission...
...But this feels wrong. This is now my 101th post... (since it's the second half)...

101) I am now very proud of my self for finishing.

100...

I think I'm gonna get started the 100th post tradition:
Write down 100 things about yourself.


...I say start because it will probably take me a few days...

AHEM:

1) I believe that Jesus is the son of God, came to Earth, and died for every one's sins.

2) I have some awesome friends and family.

3) I have a crazy dog who can tell me what he is thinking through his eyes.

4) I live in a desert ...and I like it.

5) I'm a nut for CS Lewis' work, and I think he was an amazing person.

6) That's ditto for JRR Tolkien too.

7) I work with horses every week.

8) I'm pretty sure the best kinds of ice cream: strawberry cheesecake, and anything with chocolate and caramel chunks.

9) (Speaking of cheesecake...) I believe that cheesecake is wonderful.

10) I am utterly impressed with anyone who can imitate Gollum, or Smeagol, whichever you call him (that was to Emma).

11) I like plaid ...who doesn't?

12) I love to read, but usually I read the same books over and over again.

13) I love to watch movies, and I like to critic them too.

14) I defiantly think old black 'n' white TV shows are cool.

15) Unfortunately, baseball is something that is on our TV every day during the season.

16) I think music is okay, but normally, I just listen to the radio (K-Love) when I need something to cut the silence.

17) I am already board of this.

18) Three foods that I am easily addicted to: chips, raisins, and bacon.

19) I can not keep any plant alive (and yes, I've even tried cacti) ...unless it is an outdoor plant and has an automatic bubbler (that means all I have to do is enjoy it).

20) My friends normally call me a germ-o-phobe... HOWEVER, they don't know that I'm the only person in the house (besides Dad) who will single-handedly clean the drains out with those little twisty-wire-tube-thingies that you stick way down in there and the pull up the grimiest junk you can think of - without complaining (just bragging).

21) I wrote all those things down more than a week ago, and now I am finally getting back to this.

22) I have a mind that doesn't easily stop thinking - this makes for much entertainment, and also lots of distraction.

23) With that in mind, my brain is often making up stories, or imagining plots, or watching and re-capping movies that I've either thought up or watched.

24) I like to draw, doodle, and do crafty and artworkish things.

25) Oh, how I wish I knew how to broad-sword fight!

26) I love climbing trees. Unfortunately, my arm-muscles are in need of a little build up to climb things to their full potential...

27) A food that looks, and sounds disgusting, and yet I have never tried,
 is an Eggplant (Eggplant lovers, do not take offense, this is only my opinion).

28) I like jeans and long, baggy, athletic shorts (ahhhhh...).

29) I live in the U.S., but I've only been to... ...2, 3, 4,... 5, 6,... 7, 8, 9,... 10, 11, 12, 13,... 14,... 15,... ...Approximately 16 or 17 of the States (I think ...not exactly sure...).

30) I have already written down 30 things, and I now have decided I deserve a break.

31) Now that I am starting to write this again after approximately a week, I am thinking that I may not finish this post.

32) I now think that this post is being too scatter-brained... ...I shall try to put a stop to this dilemma.

33) I don't like plain old milk in a glass.

34)...however I do like it in cheese...

35) A random quote out of a movie that I often find myself saying lately is: "I'll take that as a yes!" (said with a dorky-looking grin) in Eragon (it was released in theaters in 2006) ...one of the most horrendously-cheesy movies that it's hilarious! And for humor's sake, I would tell you to watch it, just to laugh at the silly script... I still find myself laughing at some of the parts in that ridiculous movie.

35) I have found that I like to read negative reviews of things on Amazon.com because of the often-funny sarcasm that people use (it can be quite humorous at times).

36) I like swords. Mid-evil swords. Fantasy swords. Cool, movieish-looking swords.

37) My favorite number is 9 (you already knew that, but why not just write it again?).

38) My favorite horse that I've ever ridden so far was a horse named Scout.

39) I almost always have songs, randomly, and commenly annoying songs stuck in my head.
...My every-day radio station...

40) I just had a brilliant idea.

41) I am now considering my brilliant idea.

42) I am now going to take my brilliant idea into action.

43) I now going to split up this post of writing 100 things down, and turn it into 100 - part I and 100 - part II.

44) And now that I have decided to do that, all I need to do is think up 6 more things to say about myself.

45) I love to make stuff out of duct tape.
