The Fallen House

An elephant once said to me, as he whispered in my ear
"Beware the mouse who chews the house and causes men to fear.
For though his strength is tiny, his feet are mighty quick
And though his brain be puny, he'll play on you his tricks."

I lived then in a cottage, as tidy as could be
And heeded not the elephant's words directed straight to me
"What harm could such an innocent beast, so shy and low to ground
Do to I or property mine, to render house unsound?"

And so it was that the little mouse was left to work and toil
And chew away my home sweet home and ground it into soil
Beneath my nose, he chiseled and gnawed and brought
The damage far beyond repair---t'was I who lacked in thought
